In 2024, our staff and former Board Member Juan Antonio Gil took a look at the 16 large plastic storage containers of books that housed our Traveling Library, and had a crazy idea: what if we bought a bus?
After inaugurating and growing the Traveling Library for several years, it was clear that the quantity was becoming unwieldy for our staff to transport and carry into classrooms as a small program team.
In many of the rural communities where we work, children have very limited access to books outside of school materials. The Traveling Library was created to make reading more accessible, engaging, and joyful for students while supporting teachers and schools with additional resources.
We wanted to be able to expand the offerings of the library so there was something to capture every student’s interest, and a retired American schoolbus, where we could install shelves and have space for our library with room to grow, made sense as an elegant solution to both of these problems.
So Juan Antonio worked to source an old school bus.
Contractors tore out nearly all of the old seats, and our staff got to work measuring. We worked with a carpenter to design shelves that ensured the books wouldn’t fall or get damaged in transport.
We hosted a competition for students to create art for the outside of the bus, and they delivered big time: a local artist brought their imaginative designs to life onto each side of the bus.
After almost a year of experimentation and renovations, as well as several iterations of improvements, the school bus was ready for books.
Sandy, the Education Program Director, and her team worked with our Executive Director Carolyn and our administration team to build our own catalogue system for the books. Carolyn bought a barcode scanner and brought it to Guatemala so that we could print stickers for each book and scan them in and out. (Did you know that there’s a barcode font? We didn’t either!)
Our staff decked out the bus in stickers, inspirational quotes, and small details that make it welcoming and exciting to visit.

These days, we’re getting ready to celebrate: the Traveling Library Bus will officially launch on June 5, 2026 with a ceremony and inauguration together with our communities. We are thrilled to share this moment with all of you, and with all of our schools, partners, and families in Guatemala.
The launch of the Traveling Library Bus is just one piece of the puzzle in improving education outcomes in rural Guatemala. While expanding access to books is a huge milestone, the bus is only meaningful if it can continue reaching children and contribute to their long term success as readers and students.
Your support helps fuel this work far beyond launch day: stocking the library with new books, maintaining the bus, supporting and accompanying teachers, and ensuring that children in rural communities have ongoing access to quality education and the resources they need to learn to read, write, and continue their education.
As we prepare to officially launch the Traveling Library Bus, we invite you to help carry this project forward. A gift to our spring campaign helps ensure that this bus is not just a one-time celebration, but a sustainable resource that can continue serving children and families for years to come.
