For Kenrry, Elenita, Sara, Reyna, Carina, and Lucía, joining the team at Nuya isn’t a leap into something unfamiliar — it’s a continuation of a journey they began years ago as participants in our programs.
This January, these six women made a bold transition: they officially joined our team as Community Coordinators within the Leadership Academy. Each brings lived experience from the same communities they now serve. Their transition from participant to staff reflects one of the core goals of our work: supporting local women to grow into leadership roles that are rooted in their own communities.
“I’m discovering so many skills… I’m surprised by the potential that I have.” Lucia’s comment echoes what so many before her have also shared: that she didn’t know what she was capable of until someone else believed in her.
Right now, our new team members are deep in “learning mode.” Their days are a rigorous blend of mastering new technology and navigating internal processes, but the real work is deeper. They are building a mindset that allows them to turn the vulnerability of a mistake into a professional milestone.
This training in personal development is already reshaping how the team sees their own power: “The most surprising aspect has been that Nuya’ gives us the opportunity to feel that we possess the capacity to grow professionally,” Elenita reflected. By cultivating a work environment based on shared values rather than top-down hierarchies, these women are reclaiming their identity as leaders.
Why Lived Experience Matters
Why is this transition so vital? Because when a mother in our program looks up and sees Lucía or Reyna facilitating a workshop, she doesn’t just see a staff member, she sees herself. This transforms our programs from services provided to a community into a movement led by the community.
As Telma, our Director of the Leadership Academy and former program participant herself, explains, the three-year journey these women are beginning is a runway. It is designed to provide long-term economic security and professional dignity that will stay with them long after their time with us concludes. They are building a foundation of sustainable growth that strengthens the entire local economy.
Moving forward together
As school begins this month, these leaders are ready to jump into the field. Lucía is eager to meet other mothers and children, seeing them not as “recipients” of help, but as partners in their work together.
To our community of supporters: your contributions act as the bridge, removing financial barriers so these women can focus on the hard work of leadership. Your solidarity makes this space for growth possible, and we are grateful to walk this path with you.
